What’s driving the news this week: The Farmers Insurance Open
Justin Rose won his 13th career tournament on Sunday. The veteran fired rounds of 62-65-68-70 at Torrey Pines, finishing seven strokes ahead of second place. Rose is the first wire-to-wire Torrey Pines winner since Tommy Bolt in 1955. Even better, Rose set a 36 and 72 hole Farmers Insurance Open scoring record this weekend, besting the previous mark of -22 by just one stroke. The previous record was held by Tiger Woods (1999) and George Burns (1987). After the final putt dropped, Rose couldn’t resist the urge to jab at Woods.
“Sorry, T-Dub, if you’re watching,” Rose joked.
He continued to say that he was aware of the record and was almost solely focussed on it by the final three holes.
Why it Matters: This is a remarkable win for the 45-year-old Rose. Despite what a -23 winning score might suggest, Torrey Pines is a brutal course. The South measures out at 7802 yards and the easier North course is 7259 yards. Despite the length and small green complexes, Rose finished with 25 birdies and an eagle. Even better, he managed to play the par 3s at a collective -5 despite bogeying two of them on Saturday.
The result of this tournament was all but decided after two rounds, but that doesn’t make it any less compelling. Rose has long been one of the good guys on tour — the kind of player that other players hope to see win. Dominating a historic course in such a fashion may be a sign of good things to come as the season starts to pick up.
Something to Feel Good About: Along with Rose’s stand-out victory, a storyline that stood out was the play of fan favourite, Joel Dahmen. The 38-year-old started his week as the fifth alternate but he finished tied for 7th (and was as high as second place at points on Saturday). Despite a disappointing 73 on Sunday, his tournament as a whole was commendable. He led the field in driving accuracy and finished 14th in greens in regulation and 19th in putting. Dahmen was solid in all aspects — he just happened to lose to a guy that set a 72 hole scoring record. That’s not so bad.
The Farmers Insurance Open is a needed lift for Dahmen after a no good, rotten 2025 season that saw him fire his long-time caddy and friend Geno Bonnalie. Through the 2025 season, Dahmen finished in the top-10 three times and made just 12 cuts. Dahmen’s T-7 finish this weekend marked his best result since a runner-up finish in April 2025 at the Corales Puntacana Championship. With an early top-10 finish under his belt, and back-to-back cuts made, Dahmen is now within the top-25 in the FedEx Cup points list. Here’s to hoping he can find his groove and make up for last season.
An Impressive Record Falls: This past weekend was the first time since the 2022 Masters that Xander Schauffele failed to make the cut, a streak that lasted 1391 days. Schauffele missed by just one stoke and while the lost stroke could be found in a couple of different places, his bogey on the North’s 7th hole on Friday was particularly egregious. After driving the green and finishing in the green-side rough, Schauffele chipped back across the green, short-siding himself in the rough. It was a crushing mistake and a disappointing way for Schauffele to lose such an impressive record (but the next time you chip one across the green, just remember, even major champions do that sometimes).
Hit the Sweet Spot: The Farmers Insurance Open served as a nice example that regular season, non-designated events still carry plenty of interest and pack compelling storylines. Along with a beautiful venue in Torrey Pines, fans were treated with some unbelievable golf from Rose and were able to cheer on lesser known names around the top-10. All the money is still with the big names in the big tournaments, but hopefully this weekend was a reminder of how good everyone else is on the PGA Tour.

The LPGA season opening event was cut short due to sub-freezing temperatures, leaving the 54-hole leader, Nelly Korda, as the champion. Korda’s win is the 16th of her career and her first since December 2024. Korda’s win was powered by her final round in which she started -4 through 3 and -6 through 9. Korda finished the day -8 which was eventually enough to secure the win after just 54 holes.
You don’t have the game you played last year or last week. You only have today’s game. It may be far from your best, but that’s all you’ve got. Harden your heart and make the best of it.
